Peak season brings higher volumes and added carrier costs. As Q4 approaches, carriers often introduce temporary surcharges across select services and shipment types. For 2026, some carriers have started releasing their peak-season pricing, with more announcements expected in the coming weeks.
These surcharges vary by carrier, service, destination, weight, and package size, and may apply to domestic, US, or international shipments. We will continue updating this page as new peak-season surcharge information becomes available.
Note: Rates, currencies, effective dates, and applicable services vary by carrier.
Below is the latest peak-season surcharge information announced by carriers.
The United States Postal Service (USPS) is applying temporary rate increases from 12:00 a.m. CT on October 4, 2026, to 12:00 a.m. CT on January 17, 2027.
The increases apply to four services only: Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, USPS Ground Advantage, and Parcel Select. No other USPS products are affected. These increases are added to current rates, which already include the Fuel Surcharge increase from April.

A few of these increases overlap. For Zones 1 to 4, Priority Mail and USPS Ground Advantage share the same increase at each weight tier:
UPS’s peak window runs from September 27, 2026, to January 16, 2027. It’s longer than the USPS window and starts a week earlier. Unlike USPS, UPS breaks its surcharges into three date periods within that window, with the highest rates landing in the Black Friday through Christmas stretch.
These apply to all package services and are charged per package.
| SURCHARGE | Sep 27 to Nov 21 | Nov 22 to Dec 26 | Dec 27 to Jan 16 |
| Additional Handling | $8.75 | $11.90 | $8.75 |
| Large Package | $96.25 | $117.50 | $96.25 |
Demand Surcharge amounts vary by service, and for some services, by volume. UPS Ground Residential and UPS Ground Saver, UPS Air Residential, and UPS Air Commercial each fall in a range from October 25 to January 16:
For UPS Ground Saver, UPS Ground Residential, and UPS Domestic Air, there’s also a per-package Demand Surcharge that steps up during the peak weeks:
| SERVICE | Oct 25 to Nov 21 | Nov 22 to Dec 26 | Dec 27 to Jan 16 |
| UPS Ground Saver | $0.50 | $0.75 | $0.50 |
| UPS Ground Residential | $0.50 | $0.75 | $0.50 |
| UPS Domestic Air | $1.35 | $2.50 | $1.35 |
Additional Handling, Large Package, and Demand Surcharges are subject to qualifying volume criteria, so the exact amount you’re charged depends on your shipping volume with UPS.
These run for the full peak window, September 27, 2026, to January 16, 2027:
| SURCHARGE | Applies To | Per Package |
| Over Maximum Limits | US domestic and various US export shipments | $530 to $590 |
| Surge Emergency Fee | UPS Standard shipments between the US and Canada or Mexico | $0.50 |
| Surge Emergency Fee | UPS Worldwide Economy DDP and DDU shipments originating from the US | $0.50 per pound |

The charges above apply to DHL Express Worldwide, DHL Express 12:00, DHL Express 10:30, DHL Express 9:00, DHL Express Envelope, DHL Express Breakbulk, including the respective import and 3rd Country equivalents
These surcharges are per package and get added on top of your existing base rates, regardless of which carrier is handling the shipment.
For a business shipping hundreds of thousands of packages during Q4, even a $0.50 to $1 increase per package adds up fast, and the larger flat surcharges can be significant if any of your products fall into those size or weight categories.
A few things worth doing now, before the peak window opens:
Peak season surcharges are a regular part of holiday shipping, but the details change each year by carrier, service, destination, and shipment type. The rates in this post reflect the latest 2026 announcements available so far. We will continue updating this page as more carriers release their peak season pricing.
